Charleston Knights 6 – 26 Black Isle Stags
The third community league season culminated on Saturday at Bught Park with a third match up between the Black Isle Stags and the Charleston Knights. In the previous match-ups, the Knights had emerged as winners, on their way to an undefeated regular season. For the third match up, the result was different.
The game started perfectly for the Knights. On their second play, quarterback Calvin Campbell launched a long pass which was hauled in by receiver Sam Mackeddie for a touchdown, to give the Knights an early 6-0 lead. The Knights defence held the Stags on their next possession, and on regaining the ball running back Craig Robertson ran for another touchdown – but it was negated by a penalty on the play. This momentum shift rejuvenated the Stags, who turned the game around with two touchdowns before half-time to take a 14-6 lead in at the break. In the second half the Knights suffered a few key injuries, and the Stags continued to impose their will by scoring two more touchdowns to secure their victory by a final score of 26-6. The Knights MVP was center and linebacker Fergus MacIntyre, who put in an exceptional effort and played through injury to try and help the Knights to victory. Once again it was an exceptionally physical game, with two very closely matched teams not giving an inch. In the end the Stags were the better team on the day, but the Knights can take a huge amount of credit for their undefeated regular season, and their second consecutive appearance in the Highland Bowl.
