As part of their core RMPS studies, all pupils in S3 at Charleston Academy are undertaking the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative. The YPI is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness amongst young people about philanthropy and their local community. Two of the aims of this project being run by Miss Mackenzie are :
- to develop the skills and confidence of young people through a real life, hands on experience of philanthropy
- to raise awareness of social service issues and the work of local charities, and channel funds to them effectively
Earlier today the school hall was packed with stalls from various local and national charities. These included Alzheimer’s Scotland, Samaritans, Autism Scotland, SNAP, Leanne Foundation, SIMBA, Crocus Bereavement Group, MFR Cash for Kids, Women’s Aid, Salvation Army – Homeless Project and the Archie Foundation.
Pupils had an opportunity to find out all they could about the various charities. This was an informal opportunity to ask questions and to find out more about the work of local charities. Following this pupils will develop their own ideas in groups as their S3 core studies progress.
