Charleston Academy pupils Rowan White (2S2), Callum White (4S4), and Stuart Dingwall (5S1) recently returned from Portugal where they had been competing as part of the Scottish Team in the World Schools Orienteering Championships at Monte Gordo, near Fargo in Portugal.

This was a truly remarkable and significant achievement for Rowan, Callum and Stuart. The Championships are an important international event in the orienteering calendar. During the opening ceremony the boys took delight wearing their kilts to parade through the Villa-Real-de-Santa-Antonio Stadium under the watchful eye of the head of the International Sports Federation.

While there, the boys took part in quite a few events, including the Middle Distance Relay in temperatures over 35C, through wild gorse, cacti, and on sandy beaches.

By the end of the week long championships the Scottish Team won 2 medals and 5 individual medals.

The championships ended with Friendship Races involving everyone in each of the 200 teams participating. The week long Championships ended with a fantastic closing ceremony at Castro Marim.

The boys have written up an excellent journal of their visit and participation in the events in Portugal. Click on the icon below to download the full version.
