Young Ambassadors – Sports Scotland

Last week our two Young Ambassadors attended the annual conference organised by Sports Scotland.

Rebecca Alexander (4S2) and Michael Jaffray (4L1) are Charleston Academy’s Young Ambassadors this year. At the conference they had the opportunity to meet and be inspired by Mark Dry, Olympic Hammer Thrower and Caitlin McClatchey, 2 x Gold Commonwealth Medal Winning Swimmer.

Young Ambassadors is a programme for young people in school between the ages of 14 and 17. Their role is to motivate and inspire other young people from primary and secondary schools across Scotland to get involved in sport within their schools.

Every secondary school in Scotland is given the opportunity to have two Young Ambassadors aged 14-17 every year. The Young Ambassadors programme is now in it’s 5th year of delivery in Scotland.

The key role of a Young Ambassador is to motivate and inspire other young people to participate in sport. This can be achieved by:

  • Raising awareness of opportunities to particpate in sport in schools, clubs and community sport hubs
  • Promoting an active lifestyle
  • Raising awareness and using the excitement of all major sporting events

Our SportsScotland Young Ambassadors Coral Allan (5T1) and Alex Murray (5K1),  accompanied by PE Teacher Mrs Aileen Thomson visited Eden Court today. The Young Ambassadors programme is for school pupils, aged 14-17, to motivate and inspire other young people from across Scotland to get involved in sport and generate enthusiasm for sporting events.

The Young Ambassador programme is part of the legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Coral and Alex attended workshops run by SportsScotland at Eden Court theatre where they also had a chance to meet Olympic silver medallist Greig Drummond, Commonwealth Gold Medallist Euan Burton and Scottish hockey internationalist Ailsa Wyllie.
