Gaelic Careers Day

Written by Charleston Academy on . Posted in Curriculum

Chaidh sgoilearan Gàidhlig bhon dàrna bliadhna gu Siuthad!, latha dreuchdan Gàidhlig a chaidh a chur air dòigh le Leasachadh Sgilean Alba, Comhairle na Gàidhealtachd, Iomairt na Gàidhealtachd ’s nan Eilean agus Bòrd na Gàidhlig. Dh’ ionnsaich sgoilearan mar a dh’fhaodadh sgilean Gàidhlig an cuideachadh nan cuid obrach agus mun raon farsaing de chothroman cosnaidh a tha ann do dhaoine le Gàidhlig. Chuala na sgoilearan mu dheidhinn obraichean anns na meadhanan, ann am foghlam, anns na h-ealain, le buidhnean eachdraidheil agus le buidhnean leasachaidh. Bha e sònraichte a bhith a’ coinneachadh ri dithis a b’ àbhaist a bhith nan sgoilearan ann an Acadamaidh Bhaile Theàrlaich agus a tha a-nis ag obair ann an saoghal na Gàidhig. Tha Karen Oakley ag obair aig Fèisean nan Gàidheal agus tha Christie Nicilleathain ag obair mar Oifigear Leasachaidh le Iomairt na Gàidhealtachd ’s nan Eilean . Bha spòrs aig na sgoilearan anns na bùthan-obrach eadar-obrachail, gu h-àraid anns a’ bhothan dhealbhan agus nuair a bhuannaich Louis Norgate an fharpais eacarsaich!

S2 Gaelic pupils attended the Siuthad! Gaelic careers event, organised by Skills Development Scotland, Highland Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Bòrd na Gàidhlig. The event provided pupils with information on the variety of ways they could use Gaelic in their future careers. It showcased the diverse range of career options for which having Gaelic is an advantage, or is essential. Pupils heard about job opportunities in the media, in education, in the arts, with Historic Environment Scotland and with development organisations. They particularly enjoyed meeting two former Charleston Academy pupils. Former Head Girl Karen Oakley now works at Fèisean nan Gàidheal and Christie MacLean works as the Graduate Gaelic Development Officer with HIE. The different workshops provided pupils with interactive, fun activities. The photo booth and Louis Norgate winning Highlife Highland’s sit-up challenge were the particular highlights!

Learning Gaelic increases Job Opportunities

Written by Charleston Academy on . Posted in Curriculum

Morna Butcher from Bòrd na Gàidhlig came to speak to S3-S5/6 classes about job opportunities for Gaelic speakers. This was very useful for S3 and S4 pupils as Employability is one of the contexts studied in National 4 and 5, and Careers is a theme in the Higher course. Morna spoke of Gaelic learners, as we have here at Charleston Academy, who have made a name for themselves in the Gaelic world, particularly in the fields of media and teaching. Pupils were then tasked with making up a lesson on the colours in small groups, using a range of resources which provided a great deal of entertainment!

Thàinig Morna Nic a’ Bhùidseir bho Bòrd na Gàidhlig a bhruidhinn ri clasaichean eadar an treas bliadhna agus an t-siathamh bliadhna mu dheidhinn cothroman cosnaidh ann an saoghal na Gàidhlig.  Bha seo air leth feumail do na sgoilearan air an treas ’s a’ cheathramh bliadhna oir ’s e Obair aon dhe na co-theacsan ann an Nàiseanta 4 agus 5 agus tha Obair cuideachd a’ nochdadh mar chuspair aig Àrd-ìre.  Bhruidhinn Morna gu sònraichte air luchd-ionnsachaidh na Gàidhlig, mar a tha againne an seo aig Acadamaidh Bhaile Theàrlaich agus mar a tha tòrr dhiubh air ainm a dhèanamh dhaibh fhèin ann an saoghal-obrach na Gàidhlig.  Leig na sgoilearan orra gur e tidsearan a bh’annta agus bha aca ri leasan air na dathan a chruthachadh ann am buidhinn – abair spòrs!
