Children in Need Choir & £850 raised

Written by Charleston Academy on . Posted in Achievements, Important Announcements, Wider Curriculum

Charleston Academy’s efforts to support Children in Need saw the school community raise over £800 for our supported charity. Various events organised by Miss Sali Massey and a team of prefects meant everyone had great fun raising this total.

Additionally, the school was very proud to host and also take part in the BBC Scotland Children in Need Choir. On the day our choir members, accompanied by Mr Scott Nairn, Acting PT Music and Miss Janis MacDonald, Geography Department, travelled to Glasgow to perform live. See this Link for more.

The BBC said of Charleston Academy:

The Charleston pupils made all the others feel so very welcome and they are a credit to themselves, their school and you!

Well done everyone.

Just in case anyone missed the Children In Need Choir you can view the rehearsals and the final performance on this link to BBC iPlayer.

The Scottish Choir this year was made up of schools from around Inverness who all travelled to Glasgow to perform live on Friday night. Rehearsals took place during November in Charleston Academy’s Hall where our own choir was joined by Cauldeen, Drakies and Merkinch Primary Schools, among others. Well done everyone.

The footage begins at 14 mins 30 secs into the programme and lasts until 22 mins 30 secs. And they sing out the programme from 55 mins too, where Charleston Academy’s Robert Thorne (4S) and Drew Pimm (1L1) perform solo pieces.

Written by Charleston Academy on . Posted in Important Announcements, Wider Curriculum

Our final fundraiser for Children in Need took place at interval today. Votes had been cast all week for the volunteer teachers who would be gunged. Mrs Cameron, Miss Massey, Mr Richards and Mr Fairfield had the honour of winning!

Well done everyone. We’ve not yet counted all the money raised but nearly £900 has been raised over the past few days. We will know our final total on Monday.

Don’t forget to watch Children in Need this evening to see our choir perform live from BBC studios in Glasgow.

Children in Need Events

Children in Need is on Friday 18th November and as one of our supported charities young people and staff are busy preparing for a variety of fund raising events. A variety of fun activities take place at lunchtime this week: Tuesday – Taste Challenge; Wednesday – Mystery Box; Thursday – Would I Lie to You Game Show; Friday – Gunge the Teacher.

Pupils can vote in the foyer at intervals and lunchtimes to decide which teachers (provided they have volunteered) take part in each activity.

We are also delighted that our Choir will take part in the telethon on Friday evening. Ten students will take part in the national choir and head down to BBC Scotland studios in Glasgow to take part on Friday. They have been rehearsing with other local schools over the past two weekends and were delighted that Pudsey came to visit them here at Charleston last Sunday. Click HERE to see footage from our Twitter of them rehearsing yesterday.

A documentary about the choir will also be shown on BBC2 Scotland on Saturday 19th.

Over £800 raised for Children in Need

Written by Charleston Academy on . Posted in Wider Curriculum

During an extended lunch break on Friday the school hall filled with nearly every pupil and staff member to watch some brave teachers and pupils have their legs waxed. Pupils bought raffle tickets in the hope of being selected to pull off the waxing strips from the legs of Mr Todd, Mr Richards, Mr Buchanan and S6 pupil Aaron Duncan-MacLeod. Luckily, Naz Hudda, Beauty Therapist and Life Sciences Lecturer at Inverness College partnered with us to oversee proceedings.

This was followed by performance of Bohemian Rhapsody by staff. The song was voted for by pupils who paid 50p to vote for the song to be performed by staff. Finally, everyone was entertained by a unique performance of “Wannabe” by Mr Foster.

All in a good cause – over £800 was raised for Children In Need in the space of 30 minutes. Great fun, well done everyone.
