Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose.

Michael Palin, CBE

Geography is the study of people, the physical landscape and how the two interact. It is a subject that can take you from highest peaks to the deepest ocean, from the heart of a bustling city to the vast open expanse of the desert. Geography is a truly global subject that gives all who study it a sense of the world around them and their place within it. In the modern world, Geography is a subject that will enable pupils to become responsible citizens on a global scale.

At Charleston pupils begin studying Geography as part of the BGE of Curriculum for Excellence. We take pride in our ability to teach units that are relevant to contemporary events such as the Commonwealth Games in 2014. In addition to this we also aim to develop key geographical skills such as ordnance survey mapping, constructing questionnaires and presenting data.

As pupils progress through the school they will have the opportunity to take National 4/5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses that aim to increase their understanding of the subject.

At all levels we provide students with the opportunity to experience Geography outside of the classroom through fieldwork.

In the Geography Department at Charleston Academy we use our own personal enthusiasm for the subject to inspire pupils and encourage them to learn more about their planet. Geography is a “great adventure” and one which we hope all pupils at Charleston will want to be a part of.

Employers rarely need narrow specialists.  They need bright, committed, inquisitive and determinedindividuals with the ability to draw on what is happening elsewhere in the world.  The best geographers are stars in this respect.
