Literacy is not just about reading and writing. It includes listening and talking, developing interpersonal and team-working skills, and developing appropriate skills in the use of language. Literacy skills are developed across all eight curriculum areas.
Numeracy is about working with numbers in its broadest sense. It includes solving problems and understanding numbers, working with money, time and measurement.
Charleston Academy has developed a renowned reading recovery programme for S1 pupils. This programme, developed by staff in our Support for Learning department is called Speeder Readers. The programme is run by our Support for Learning staff, our Librarian and staff in the English Department. Pupils’ reading age is assessed early in S1 and any pupil whose reading age is two years or more behind their chronological age will be invited to join the programme with the consent of their parents. The programme developed by staff at Charleston Academy has been so successful that Highland Council is now rolling it out to all schools in the authority.
Plans are also underway to develop a Numeracy Recovery programme and work is currently on-going involving Charleston Academy staff to develop a suitable programme.
