Houses and Prefects

Each year we appoint between sixty and 100 prefects from both S6 and S5. The excellent ethos and sense of community at Charleston Academy would not be possible without appointing these young people to the position of Prefect in their final years at school. Although our prefects undertake a range of duties and responsibilities across the school such as supervising the canteen, corridors and social areas, and assisting at formal events such as concerts and parents’ meetings, the main role of our Prefects is to act as Ambassadors. They do this for the school and community but also for themselves and our wider community of young people.

As young people begin to consider their future careers, whether through University or College, an apprenticeship or directly into employment, the inclusion in any application or reference of the prefect role adds value. The role of our Prefects is an important and valuable one. Any S4 or S5 pupil can apply to be a Prefect in S5/6

The responsibilities given to our Lead Prefect Team mean that they are Ambassadors for the school, role models for younger pupils, and developing young leaders. The Lead Prefect Team represent the school at Remembrance Day in Inverness, attend the Kirking of the Council and undertake a range of formal duties within school which includes taking a lead role at House and Year Group assemblies.

S6 pupils make a written application in May for the Lead Prefect Team and may be interviewed for a range of positions.

A collective staff reference is sought, summing up the attitudes, responsibilities, and achievements of each of the candidates who are interviewed.

A staff team consisting of the Rector, a Depute Rector, and several Tutors conduct the interviews.
