STEM

SCIENCE | TECHNOLOGY | ENGINEERING | MATHS

STEM is an initiative developed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to increase the number of young people gaining qualifications in Science, Technologies, Engineering, and Maths.

It’s recognised that within the Highlands and the North of Scotland the key industrial sectors are:

  • Energy
  • Life Sciences
  • Food & Drink
  • Finance
  • Creative Industries

Through a STEM Ambassadors Programme teachers can call on industry experts to come into classes to facilitate a range of projects. There are 500 STEM Ambassadors from a diverse range of 120 companies.

STEM Ambassadors act as invaluable role models for young people and provide real-life inspiring motivation for careers in STEM subjects.

Charleston Academy works with STEM North of Scotland in several ways. Scottish Government funding allows STEM to give grants to schools to allow the purchase of equipment. Charleston Academy used this grant money to establish our Science Club, run by our enthusiastic Science Technician, Mrs Pam Hamilton.

In 2013, STEM Ambassadors also worked with our S3 Physics Pupils on a project called the Ashfield Music Festival. Find out more about it HERE.
