On Monday 21st November, the world famous Scottish writer, Barry Hutchison, came into Charleston Academy to talk to S1 about his new book ‘Beaky Malone – The world’s greatest liar’. He explained how he comes up with storylines for his novels and how he tries to put the essence of his own experiences directly onto the pages – including his childhood fears of squirrels and old ladies! He also spoke about his most famous series Invisible Fiend; one of these was banned in Germany so they are not for the faint hearted! He has written 5 bestselling series and is currently working with Dreamworks to create an animated series.
Barry Hutchison was incredibly fun and interactive as well as informative about his journey to become a writer. He looked like he was having as much fun presenting his talk as we had listening (which was needless to say a lot!) We spent an hour with him but it would have been great to go on longer. The talk inspired us to read his books and maybe even to write stories! Everyone clearly enjoyed it and our thanks to the English department for organising this event.
