Chinese New Year at Charleston

Written by Charleston Academy on . Posted in Achievements, Wider Curriculum

The Chinese Club helped celebrate Chinese New Year on the 19th February. The previous week we had learned to make Chinese lanterns and paper cuttings that they would use to decorate their houses. This week the club were learning to make traditional Chinese dumplings.

The Home Economics department kindly allowed us use of their facilities and two home economics classes (s1 and S2) were also given a demonstration of how to make the dumplings and given the opportunity to taste them. We also learned about the traditions of Chinese New Year, including bringing relatives oranges and also some words in Mandarin to wish people all the best. “Gong xi!” Many thanks to Monica and Wendy from SHIMCA for giving up their time to come and share their traditions with us.
