Shinty – Wade Cup

On Wednesday 19th of November the Charleston Academy Under 16 shinty team travelled to Kingussie to contest the annual Wade Cup trophy.

A strong team travelled and on arrival at The Dell were greeted with perfect playing conditions. Competition for the cup was fierce, with teams travelling from Glenurquhart, Lochaber and Portree as well as the hosts Kingussie. Charleston started the competition against Lochaber and were edged out 1-0 in a tight encounter that could have gone either way. In the next game we recorded a goalless draw against a strong Lochaber team. The next game against local rivals Glenurquhart was again a close encounter, with Robbie Brindle recording the only goal of the game to give Charleston a 1-0 victory. These results meant that Charleston needed only to beat Portree to go through to the final. Over the fifteen minute game Charleston pressed hard, and had the advantage for most of the game. However, we could not break down a resolute Skye defence, and the game eventually finished 0-0. Kingussie and Lochaber advanced to the final, which was eventually won 1-0 by Kingussie.

Overall, the team played very well and enjoyed the atmosphere of the cup, representing Charleston excellently. We were proud of our performance and enjoyed the competition. The team gained vital experience and will look forward to more strong performances in the near future.
